Kade Snowden hoses down suggestions the Knights are premiership material

  • BARRY TOOHEY
  • THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
  • MARCH 24, 2015 12:00AM

REJUVENATED prop Kade Snowden claims the Knights are still a long way off being worthy of premiership heavyweight status despite defying the odds and reeling off three straight wins to start the season.

Not since an Andrew Johns-inspired Newcastle got off to a flyer in 2006 have the Knights won their opening three games in the NRL.

But don’t be fooled by the premiership ladder according to Snowden.

“We are nowhere near the standard of the heavyweight sides like Souths and the Roosters or even Penrith,” Snowden said.

“We’ve played pretty tough and shown some good character but in all the games we’ve won, we have just been able to hang in and pick off the teams at the end.

“It’s good for the confidence to be unbeaten but we are not kidding ourselves.

There is a lot to improve and work on.”

Snowden, whose own form after a couple of injury-affected seasons has been a revelation, believes Saturday’s game at Hunter Stadium against Penrith will give a better gauge of where the team is at and what it might be capable of.

“I reckon they will be the best team we have played so far,” he said.

“We’ll need to be better in a lot of areas then we have been when we come up against them.

“Just with our execution with the footy and not giving away penalties and putting ourselves under pressure.

That’s why we made it tough for ourselves against the Titans.”

After vowing to become coach Rick Stone’s pack-leader following the departure of Willie Mason to Manly, Snowden has been a key figure in Newcastle’s early season revival post-Wayne Bennett.

In their opening three wins, he has averaged 141 metres and 29 tackles including a game high 172 metres against the Titans on Sunday.

If he can maintain the rage, he will surely be knocking on Laurie Daley’s Origin door.

“That was my number one goal after having a full drama-free off-season — to start well and play some good footy and put myself back in the Origin frame,” he said.

“It’s the best I’ve felt injury-wise for a fair while.

That’s got a lot to do with it.”

The Knights expect Beau Scott (ankle) and Jarrod Mullen (neck/shoulder) to be fit for the Panthers but they could lose Snowden’s front-row partner Korbin Sims for up to two games with Sims facing two separate grade one dangerous throw charges out of the Titans game.

Well it so happens I for one agree Kade. And that is not a very positive attitude to take into this Saturday's game.

Watching the Titans replay, we were pretty awful and the Pennies did try hard last night. Need a big improvement in handling and limit the penalties, Chris in particular.

Those of you going to the game cheers a little harder to cover for me since I'll be MIA. Not sure yet if the Virgin Australia app allows you to watch Foxtel channels or not.

I'm going to game! First Knights game I've been to since end of 2013 I'm pretty sure, so stoked!

Gonna be hard to win especially if Korbin doesnt play... Should be a good game, hopefully we can get our short kicking game back on track

Can't wait for Saturday. I'm really looking forward to this game. I can see us absolutely giving it to the Panthers (who may struggle to back up after their loss last night - hopefully). ;)

I'll be there. I cannot remember the last time we lost at home. Is it 7 straight now? We just seem to grow another leg at home, especially with a vocal crowd.

Its a bummer about Korbin, however with this team I just feel that we will adapt to whatever hits us and give 110%. I think because we don't have many superstars, I don't feel like we are going to crumble if one or two is missing.

Again with this game the head and the heart are telling me 2 different things.

If Mullo and Ty can fire then we have a good chance. Actually a bit nervous about Mullo's fitness...what if he doesn't play .

must start well and get the crowd into the game........ and the panthers may start sluggish after a tough Monday night match

Why? I'd prefer them to be realistic than thinking they're unbeatable.

Round 4 game day update

Tue 24th March, 01:59PM

Voice for Mining Family Day

Thousands of miners and their families will join Newcastle Knights supporters to pack Hunter Stadium on March 28 to see their team take on the Penrith Panthers.

The Knights are set to wear special hi-viz miners jerseys in support of the region’s miners.

The Knights have had their strongest start to the season since 2006 and will be aiming to string four wins together when they face the Panthers on Saturday in front of a home crowd.

Voice For Mining Family Day is the pinnacle of the partnership between NSW Mining and the Newcastle Knights.

More than 45,000 footy fans and miners have been part of the celebration since 2013 and it is now a major community event on the calendar for thousands of people across the Hunter Valley.

Fans and mining supporters are expected to show their support by turning out in orange and hi-viz work wear and is a demonstration of the long held importance of miners to the Hunter community.

Winning the Titans game was crucial because this Panthers game looks to be the toughest game in our first 8 rounds.

We have a lot of things spurring us on.

Being back at home and surely the stadium will be packed.
Looking at 4/4 for the first time in 13 years.
Anniversary of Alex being injured
Looking at continuing 7 straight wins at home
Whoever replaces Sims will be looking to make a big impression

It's going to be our toughest game but I've thought that every week now and we keep finding a way to win. We've stuck it to some of the best forward packs already and our backs have outclassed their opposition so hopefully we can keep it going. Our halves are the ones really needing to step up, they'll be crucial. Whether we drag them down and get into a grind like we've been doing or blow them off the park it doesn't make a difference to me. I'm once again really not expecting a win whatsoever but you can only imagine the pride and excitement if they can manage to pull out a win here.

Segeyaro scares me the most, especially with penriths ability to offload, I think we are in for a big reality check this week... But in saying that I didn't think we would be where we are so I hope the boys keep surprising me :)

Have a feeling Moylan and segeyaro are going to have a field day. Our defence has been good but I don't think we currently have enough points in us.

Our attack has been horrible, Mullen and Roberts really need to step it up.

Sione needs a spell in nsw cup.

The pair of them are certainly quick up the middle of the ruck when forwards tire, and/or bench players come on and to me are own main threat.

We need a 30% iprovement to be in the ball park, but I for one think it is possible. (Fool that I am).

I think gagai and BJ need to be on defensively with Moylan running those 2nd man plays out the back........... need to get up in his face and give him no time

We need Beau Scott to hunt him down and take him out of the game aka Jonathan Thurston!!!

He can throw Segeyaro on his list too!!!
