Good to see Brown applying some pressure to the NRL over not allowing an amnesty period for clubs who over spent, claiming they didn't know what the salary cap would be.

Wasn't sure where to put this thread, so mods can move it to wherever they think is right. Maybe we need a general recruitment discussion thread to talk about issues around recruitment that are not specifically rumors, signings etc.
 
While the NRL really should of got this sorted before the season kicked off I have no sympathy for clubs that have over spent.

They were warned to not budget for over $8.8million around April time I believe. Obviously some haven't listened and spent willy nilly luke its the Super League war again.
 
Turdburg will be capable of anything!

Coming from one of the biggest cheaters what else would one expect of him but letting 'the big guys' off with a 12 month amnesty. Even a 12 year amnesty will not stop rorting and cheating.
 
Did the NRL even advertise at the time that the clubs had been advised a cap to work of.

Sounds like Brown was veto'ing the NRL possible trying to do the dodge with such an amnesty by making it public knowledge and accepted fact well in advance so if the NRL did try such a thing he could scream blue murder.

Wonder if he makes such comments, if the Wests take over isn't imminent.
 
Smart move by Brownie, exposing notification dates and virtually stymying any amnesty before it is mooted.

This will force Clubs outside the Cap to release players who would not normally be in the market place.

Given that we are reported to have room in our Cap for another Marque and 5-6 others we would be in the box seat - providing we don't blow it in the mean time.
 
For mine, with us in the box seat is precisely why the NRL will go the amnesty way.

Brown has been guarding our cap like a pensioner with their last $5 before pay day.
 
i think we will definately have more pull and influence under wests than we have done in the past which is great.

fingers cross it falls our way!

Not sure why clubs would overspend when they were given a strong idea of what to budget for

And yes the NRL should definately not let clubs weasel out of overspending

He did a few interviews that day and mentioned the salary cap in all of them, so im certain it was done for a reason
 
How good is it to be in a position to pounce when all these other clubs are shreading their rosters!!!

Its fricken awesome we have a coach (and Mooney) that has had the balls to put the future of the club ahead of his own short term coaching career... with the development of our younger guys the last 2 years and the players we're now able to bring in, there's good days ahead.

I think the trouble started when Grant set the "Salary Cap forecast" alot higher late last year and then the NRL reneged earlier this year which caused the Club revolt which in turn forced Grant to tender his retirement plan.
 
Bold move by Brown which should be applauded! Unfortunately the NRL answer to nobody and will do whatever suits them at the end of the day! Sorry except for Newscorp:brickwall:

IT IS the Chinese meal which could flip rugby league on its head.

Some of the game’s most powerful club figures have been invited to an exclusive, secret Chinese feast on Monday by Canterbury chairman Ray Dib, as the clubs prepare to wage war on the NRL’s planned $9.2 million dollar salary cap offer.

Among the invitees of the original email sent on Wednesday include Penrith’s Phil Gould and Brian Fletcher, Canberra’s Don Furner, St George Illawarra chairman Brian Johnston, Roosters boss Joe Kelly, Cronulla chief executive Lyall Gorman and South Sydney’s head of football Shane Richardson.

Parramatta’s Bernie Gurr has also been extended an invite while Wests Tigers officials were snubbed.

NRL boss Todd Greenberg has also been invited and is expected to front up where it is understood he will give the clubs an updated understanding of the NRL’s salary cap position.

Canterbury and Canberra are among the clubs in most salary cap strife while a host of others clubs budgeted for a salary cap of about $9.5 million.

With suggestions the cap could be as low as $9.2 million next year, tensions are starting to build within club ranks as they fear that may need to shed a host of star players.

Canterbury have been making waves with NRL officials in recent weeks as they look to work out how they can become salary cap compliant by the time next year’s season starts.

However, clubs have plenty of power if they present a united front.

All that is needed is five disgruntled clubs to stick together and they could block any salary cap agreement struck between the NRL and the Rugby League Players Association which has the potential to send the game into further chaos.

Seventy five per cent of clubs — or 12 of the 16 — must agree to the new collective bargaining agreement. Greenberg and the NRL will meet all clubs on Thursday to present the new-look CBA.

Dib said he would use Monday’s meeting to gauge each club’s position, with the salary cap expected to dominate proceedings. Dib has promised to shout the attendees lunch inside Canterbury Leagues Club.

“It is a catch-up with some of the executive of the various NSW-based membership owned clubs,” Dib told the Daily Telegraph.

“It is to find out where everyone is at. What their feelings are and the general conscious heading into next week’s meeting.”

Aside from potentially rounding up five clubs in a bid to block a low-balled salary cap offer, other salary cap alternatives will also be discussed on Monday.

These include having a “soft” salary cap for next year or having a higher cap for 2018 before scaling back player costs over for the next three years.
