2017 NSW Cup

The best part about Pat in the forwards is that he no longer has those moments when he thinks he is a playmaker and does something that no one but him sees coming, which almost always leads to a turnover.

We had 4 players in the Team of the Week

1. Nick Meaney
Club: Newcastle Knights; 2017 TOTW selections: 2.

15 total runs, 168 total metres, one try-assist, one line-break, five tackle-breaks, one offload.
The young Knights fullback continues to impress in the Intrust Super Premiership, earning his third Team of the Week selection with another good showing against the Sea Eagles. Setting up a try and returning the ball strongly, Meaney is in fine form and a major factor in Newcastle's recent run.

8. Luke Yates
Club: Newcastle Knights; 2017 TOTW selections: 0.

14 total runs, 112 total metres, one tackle-break, 46 tackles.
In another barnstorming performance Luke Yates set the tone for the Newcastle forward pack, laying the foundations for his side's eventual 10-point win. Showing the form that saw him playing NRL to start the season, Yates did his chances of a first-grade recall no harm, leading the Knights to a fourth-straight win.

12. Braden Robson
Club: Newcastle Knights; 2017 TOTW selections: 0.

17 total runs, 164 total metres, one line-break, three tackle-breaks, 30 tackles, one try.
Knights young-gun Braden Robson caught the eye with an all-round effort in the side's win over the Workers Sea Eagles. Claiming a try for his efforts, Robson carried the Steeden on 17 occasions, brushing aside the Blacktown defence with three tackle-breaks to his name also. The performance sees Robson earn a first-time entry into the Intrust Super Premiership NSW Team of the Week for 2017.

17. Pasami Saulo
Club: Newcastle Knights; 2017 TOTW selections: 0.

11 total runs, 105 total metres, three tackle-breaks, one try.
Newcastle edge forward Pasami Saulo impressed when off the bench in the Knights' 22-12 win over the Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles in the Hunter. With a high invovlement rate in his time on the field, Saulo was rewarded with a try for his efforts done in bringing the ball out of his own end.

Match Analysis

On paper, the Reserve Grade Newcastle Knights look impressive this week, with a number of NRL regulars taking up spots.

Notably one of the Knights top tacklers, young forward Sam Stone will be playing his first game in ISP this season.

“I have been looking forward to Stoney playing a game with us at some stage,” commented ISP coach Simon Woolford.

“He has been in NRL and has been recovering from a sternum injury so this week we get to have him.

“As far as back rowers go, he is really good from an attacking point of view but he’s very smart defensively so he’s going to make our team a better one.”

Jaelen Feeney has had a rest and is back in the halves.

“He has had a couple of weeks off with a knee that has troubled him for a lot of years so he’s played pretty well at the NRL level,” explained Woolford.

“He has got a lot of attacking flare and certainly a player that can contribute some points to the team so we are looking forward to having him back as well.”

While Jack Stockwell is expected to continue his good work in the front row.

“Stocky played last week but he was crook leading into the game all week so he didn’t get to play much time, so hopefully that is behind him and we look forward to him playing some more minutes for us on the weekend,” said the Reserve Grade coach.

With equal points on the ladder, there’s not too much separating the two sides, although the Bears have one up on the Knights with a win earlier in the season.

“We played them early on when we were struggling and they beat us 30-6 at McDonald Jones Stadium but they had quite a good side that day,” said Woolford.

Woolford admits while their side has been boosted with a few inclusions this week, the contribution needs to be from his entire 17.

“On paper, we do have a good side but we need to make sure the rest of the players don’t drop their guard because we’ve got some NRL experience,” Woolford explained.

“We need 17 blokes contributing to a good performance and we’ll be making sure that is the message this week.”

“With such a poor start to the season, we can’t afford to be dropping games, we need to keep winning and to consolidate our position.

Where it will be won

Woolford will again be looking at his powerhouse forwards to step up.

“Our forwards have been doing a really good job so I’ll be looking for guys like Jack Stockwell to lead us because we have obviously lost guys like Mickey Paea and Pauli Pauli over the last two weeks,” he said.

“Tyrone Amey, Faitotoa Faitotoa, Sam Bernstrom and Pat Mata’utia, they’ve all done a good job for us in the middle so we’ll be looking for those guys to continue that.

“We have also got some really creative halves and our back three have been doing a really good job so nothing much changes for us, we’re going to stick with the formula that’s worked.”

PREVIEWS | ISP NSW Round 20

Fri 21st July, 11:30AM

North Sydney Bears v Newcastle Knights
North Sydney Oval, Sunday 23 July 3pm

Rounding out the weekend’s play, North Sydney host Newcastle at North Sydney Oval.

Arguably the form team of the competition, Newcastle head into the clash with the Bears with four-straight wins to their name.

The Bears meanwhile plucked a draw for the jaws of defeat in their Round 18 clash with the Mounties – and 80th minute penalty goal salvaging a sole competition point - and one that may prove vital at the year’s end.

Props to Braden Robson for making TOTW. Hope he gets his shot at NRL, I think he's very underrated.

Robson is having a great year. I'm not sure how he would fit into firstgrade - maybe as a centre - but he is one of our best in reserve grade.

Saulo making team of the week as an 18 year old (for another 10 days) and in only his second game is fantastic to see.

Newcastle as named except for Pasami Saulo out and Sam Bernstrom added to the bench.

we blow about our 10th chance
even the pro norths commentators are saying norths are offside in nearly every tackle.

10-4
Norths are giving away penalty after penalty and giving us all the ball, but every time they get a penalty and some field position, they score.
They have had 2 chances and scored twice - we have had 10 chances and scored once.
