ROUND 4: Knights v Panthers @ Hunter Stadium

Knights biggest issue is they dont have much impact off the bench, When their starting forwards are on the bench they look very flat and average. Which is why at full strength id like too see

8 Snowden 10 Faálogo 11 Scott 12 T.Sims 13 Smith 14 Randell 15 K.Sims 16 Vavai/Stockwell 17 Rochow

IMO that should have big impact off the bench!!

I agree re Fa'alogo. I thought he was very solid in starting. Needs to start or play NSW Cup.

Houston played well, anyone that thinks he didn't were obviously watching a different game.

Houston did play extremely well, but I just cannot overlook weak hit up after weak hit up, soft tackle after soft tackle. His contribution today was reasonable and much improved on previous weeks, though, I still reckon we would have been a better team today with Houston in NSW Cup and Tapine starting backrow

that crowd was so good, 20,000 strong and you could hear it great performance little edgy towards the end but we were always in control nice to see mullen having a go again, and tyrone's kicking was perfection, can't believe i'm saying this but MOTM had to be houston worked really hard, dying for next game to make it 5/5.

Newcastle Knights remain undefeated with victory over Penrith Panthers

WHO would have believed it?

A month into the premiership and the unheralded Newcastle Knights are outright NRL leaders.

On the back of some brutal defence led by Beau Scott and Jeremy Smith, the Knights repelled a late Penrith fight-back to clinch a 12 point win at Hunter Stadium.

They set up the victory with three first half tries before holding out a surging Penrith in the second half, securing a fourth straight win which will surely have them flying under the radar as far as premiership contention is concerned no longer.

Scott and Smith, who targeted Peter Wallace, leaving the Panthers skipper battered and bruised, were outstanding for the home side while Penrith centre Jamal Idris, fullback Matt Moylan and replacement Tyrone Peachey tried everything to claw back their side’s 14 point halftime deficit.

The two sides went into the game under-strength with the Panthers missing hooker James Segeyaro and the Knights losing winger James McManus (eye infection) and backrower Robbie Rochow (back).

Rochow, who will have surgery this week that will sideline him for up to two months, succumbed to back spasms in the warm-up, forcing coach Rick Stone to use Joseph Tapine on the bench after he had just played a full game in NSW Cup.

But the late injury set-back had little effect on the Knights who led 18-4 at halftime despite running into a stiff breeze.

With just four full days to recover after their bruising Monday night loss to the Roosters, the Panthers were slow out of the blocks and the home side was quick to capitalise.

Chris Houston, who started the game for Rochow, ran a good angle off Jarrod Mullen to cross after just eight minutes and it was 12-0 just seven minutes later when Adam Clydsdale slammed the ball down from dummy half after a 30 metre Mullen burst.

Matt Moylan put his side under further pressure by kicking out on the full from the re-start and when skipper Kurt Gidley pushed off Peter Wallace to cross, it was 18-0 and the Knights were doing it way too easy.

Panthers coach Ivan Cleary, searching for some enthusiasm, went for some fresh legs off the bench and with some more possession Penrith finally got themselves into the contest.

They had a couple of cracks at the Knights defence but came up empty before Wallace opted to run it on the last and winger Josh Mansour was the benefactor with a try out wide.

The Panthers could have found themselves closer on the scoreboard but five minutes from halftime, Wallace was penalised for a double movement afer reaching out to plant the ball over the line.

Trailing by 14 at the break, Penrith threw plenty at the Knights early in the second half but came up with nothing against some outstanding Newcastle defence.

Rubbing salt into the wound, the first time the Knights ventured into Panthers territory, they posted further points to take a commanding 24-4 lead.

This time, they worked a set move out wide with Mullen and Gidley prominent before Akuila Uate crossed un-touched out wide.

Moylan scored his side’s second try with 14 minutes left but it was too little, too late.

Beau Scott was man of the match every day of the week

If we're going to award praise according to statistics then Houston would have been one of the most impressive forwards in the comp over the last 4 years -- and he was the best player on the field today

Houston had a decent game imo, and that's all it was

Newcastle Knights defeat Penrith Panthers to record best start to season in nine years

March 28, 2015 - 5:44PM

Newcastle are the NRL's new outright leaders and only undefeated team after a 26-14 triumph against Penrith at Hunter Stadium on Saturday.

After wins against the Warriors, North Queensland and Gold Coast to open the season, the Knights maintained their perfect record by claiming their biggest scalp so far.

Exuding confidence, the Knights exploded out of the blocks to post three tries and lead Penrith 18-4 at half-time.

In the eighth minute, five-eighth Jarrod Mullen reversed the play and back-rower Chris Houston strolled over for his first try of the year.

Seven minutes later, Penrith's defence was again exposed when Knights hooker Adam Clydsdale burrowed over from dummy half.

Looking lathargic and shellshocked by Newcastle's opening blitz, the Panthers slipped further behind almost immediately when Knights skipper Kurt Gidley dummied and beat two defenders to score out wide.

Halfback Tyrone Roberts converted all three tries to make it 18-0 after 18 minutes.

The visitors hit back with a try to winger Josh Mansour in the 24th minute, unconverted by fullback Matt Moylan, and could have further reduced the deficit if the video referee had not denied halfback Peter Wallace in the 35th minute.

Wallace was crunched just short of the line but, as he slid in the momentum of the tackle, reached overhead to ground the ball in-goal.

After repeated replays, video referees Steve Clark and Luke Phillips ruled double movement and awarded Newcastle a penalty.

There was another video-referee setback for the Panthers seven minutes into the second half when giant centre Jamal Idris was wrapped up inches from the line by a cluster of defenders.

Newcastle capitalised on a Moylan fumble in the 53rd minute to go on the attack, and seconds later they increased their lead when winger Akuila Uate scored after a set move.

Roberts' conversion made it 24-4.

Moylan partially made amends in the 66th minute when he sliced through to score after a scrum win.

A Dean Whare try in the 71st minute, converted by Moylan, gave the Panthers a glimmer of hope at 24-14, but the Knights lifted the intensity to close down the game.

Roberts increased the final margin with a penalty goal after the full-time siren.

After South Sydney's loss to Parramatta on Friday night, Newcastle are now the only team yet to suffer a defeat this season.

And with their next two games against St George Illawarra (home) and Cronulla (away), the winning streak might be far from finished.

Not since 2006, Andrew Johns' last full season before retirement, have the Knights kicked off a season with four consecutive wins.

One more victory and this will be their best start to any season since 2002, when they were the reigning premiers.

It is a remarkable turnaround from last season, when their campaign was virtually over by the halfway point and they eventually finished a disappointing 12th.

The Knights were disrupted by two late injury withdrawals before the match.

Winger James McManus was ruled out with an infected eye socket, prompting Knights coach Rick Stone to switch teenage Test star Sione Mata'utia to the left edge.

Then back-rower Robbie Rochow suffered a back spasm in the warm-up and was unable to take his place.

Chris Houston was promoted from the bench to replace Rochow, and Joseph Tapine, who had just played in Newcastle's reserve-grade win against the Panthers, was called in as the new interchange player.

Penrith had their own injury issues, with key players Jamie Soward (back) and James Segeyaro (concussion) both unavailable.

In a further encouraging sign for the Knights, the crowd of 20,114 was an improvement of almost 4000 on the 16,146 turnout for their previous home game, when they hosted the Warriors in round one.

Was at the game and was awesome to see everyone get behind the boys! Seems the community and the team are coming together as one I love it! One negative to come from today's win is gagai's pathetic defense, Yeh his decent enough with ball in hand, but he's very ordinary in d... Looked ordinary last week and took the wrong option nearly everytime in defense today, in positive news i thought falago played great in the starting role, hopefully it stays that way, even houston had a strong game. The try aside he made s few good tackles when he needed to! Great job fellas! Now we get Tariq back and look down the dragons for 5-0

Five things we learned from Knights vs Panthers

March 28, 2015

THE Knights remain the only unbeaten side in the competition as they notched up their fourth win in a row with a 26-14 victory over the Panthers at Hunter Stadium.

1. The Knights can make the top four.

After their fourth consecutive victory the Knights are now well and truly the real deal in 2015.

Grinding wins over top four hopefuls the Warriors, Cowboys and Panthers is evidence enough that Newcastle can mix it with the best in the competition and they will be targeting a top four finish.

2. The Panthers rely heavily on James Segeyaro.

Such has been the dominance of Segeyaro in the early part of the season; the Panthers looked lost without his direction and strike power through the middle.

Apisai Koroisau did not have a bad game but the Penrith will be hoping to get their playmaker Segeyaro back sooner rather than later.

3. Beau Scott is one of the hardest working players in the NRL.

Fast gaining a reputation as one of the toughest men in the game, his 27 tackles in the second half against the Panthers is proof of his commitment to the Knights defence which held an excellent Panthers attack to just 14 points.

4. Rugby league is alive and kicking in Newcastle.

Not since the great Andrew Johns retired has there been a buzz around Hunter Stadium like there was today.

Over 20,000 Novocastrians cheered their players on in their special ‘high vis’ mining tribute jerseys and with performances like this the crowds will only continue to build throughout the season.

5. The Panthers are missing Jamie Soward’s influence.

Throughout an injury depleted 2014 season Jamie Soward was the one constant for Penrith and his cool head and precision kicking game were sorely missed by the panthers again today.

Panthers fans will be hoping he makes a speedy recovery from his back injury in the coming weeks.

Quit it, did you just watch that game? You hate this guy even when he plays well.

Keep it up champ.

Hey hey as I said earlier this week I am running an 'anti mock' campaign here. So far it's working perfectly, so please try to understand. And I'm feeling pretty certain the Knights will lose next week too ;)

So yes, I will keep it up

Separate to this, though, is the Houston dilemma -- the guy went full retard in rounds 1-3 and has one decent game in rnd 4 and your treating my criticisms like they're founded on fantasy. Houston will go full retard again in rnd 5 I'm certain of it. So you should be careful who you choose to defend

Why are these articles saying best start since 2006? Swear we lost to the Warriors in round 4 that year. I remember hearing on the radio on the way to that game that Johns was out.
