Roosters enforcer Dylan Napa emerges as an X-factor in Knights’ chase for Mitchell Pearce

SYDNEY Roosters enforcer Dylan Napa has emerged as a possible X-factor in the Newcastle Knights’ bid to sign Mitchell Pearce.

While Napa is contracted until the end of 2019, the 25-year-old could join the Knights next year if the Roosters permit him to sign with another club.

The Roosters are chasing young South Sydney back-rower Angus Crichton and letting Napa go to the Knights early could benefit both clubs.

Pearce and Napa are good mates and Pearce recently posted a photo on Instagram of the two catching up while on holiday in New York.

Pearce wore the brunt of criticism for the Roosters’ disappointing finals exit that led to Cooper Cronk’s signing.

But the performances of Napa and fellow front-rower Jared Waerea-Hargreaves also came under heavy scrutiny at the Bondi club.

Napa would add grunt to a Newcastle pack that recently acquired veteran forwards Aidan Guerra, Chris Heighington and Jacob Lillyman.

The Knights also have some gun youngsters coming through, including the Saifiti twins and young Brisbane recruit Herman Ese’ese.

If the Knights can’t sign Napa early, they are prepared to wait until he is available.

Pearce and Napa are managed by the same player agent, Steve Gillis, who is due to meet with the Knights this week when Phil Gardner, the boss of the powerful Wests Group that now owns the Knights, returns from business in New Zealand.

Pearce met with Nathan Brown in Newcastle last Friday and it is understood he went home impressed with the coach’s vision for the future.

While the Knights are yet to make an official offer to Pearce, money is not an issue.

Newcastle still have the best part of $2 million available in their salary cap for next year.

And they have also signed Pearce’s former Roosters teammates Guerra, Connor Watson and Shaun Kenny-Dowall.

While Manly are said to be in the box seat to sign Pearce, they are still trying to offload players despite releasing Blake Green to the New Zealand Warriors.

The Daily Telegraph has been told the Knights have been approached about their interest in signing Manly pair Darcy Lussick and Brian Kelly.

But the Knights want to sign a top playmaker and a prop — and Pearce and Napa fit the bill perfectly.

Newcastle chased hard for Matt Scott and James Graham but couldn’t convince either to make the move.

While Napa doesn’t have their experience, at his best he is one of the game’s most feared enforcers.

Against South Sydney last year, he pinned a target on Sam Burgess and convincingly came out on top.

It was rated one of the most outstanding performances from a front-rower in the modern game but some people at the Roosters question his consistency.

Officially the Sydney Knights if this happens. Obviously makes sense why their is no decision. Still need to meet with the big boss and Napa has now been thrown in the mix.

Yeah I've thought this too. But sometimes a change of scenery can do wonders. That game against Souths was crazy.

We've got a lot of metre-eating props. Napa would add some aggression and impact.

would be a great signing. Dont care how many Roosters we get! they are a top club for a reason and Napa has great potential and would 100% be one of our better props imo

Signing all the players the roosters don't want doesn't seem like the way to beat the roosters.

    Maybe not, who knows.

But it's certainly a way to be more competitive with the roosters. And if we can be competitive with the likes of the Roosters, we can beat a lot of other teams.

Anyway, I doubt we get wither Pearce or Napa, Napa still contracted anyway. Not that contracts mean much these days.

Napa is the bloke who couldn't be bothered coming to Newcastle before he re-signed this year...

When Mooney built up a good side at Cronulla he basically signed a core of experienced players from Penrith and built around them.
It could be he is trying to get a core of experience from the Roosters, or maybe it's just worked that way because the Roosters are rebuilding like Penrith were at the time.

Buhrer gave us a shove aside too, Heighington aswell. As much as I'd love to take it personally, you look at how horrifically bad we were at our lowest point in 2016 & it's hard to begrudge anyone. When decent players may be willing to come, it's in our best interest to work something out as long as we get good value.

We'v got quite a few players who will retire in 3 years and give our young ones a chance to develop unlike now where they are thrown in the grinder.

Will also make us legitimate top 8 threats which is well weird lol.

Napa is severely over rated. Can get a much better forward than him on the same money or even cheaper than what he would command.

Only good for 1 good game in every 10 and a couple big hits. That's about it.

He and JWH must be the most overrated tough guy impersonators in the comp.. The main reason in my opinion as to why the Roosters have been bundled out in the finals with ease the last few years. They don't step up when the opposition forwards do.

True, let's forget about Pearce. He hasn't been able to guide them to much unless the teams loaded to the gills.

Be very interesting to see how everyone fits if we do get Napa. Finally we would have a fair amount of decent depth in the forwards

I'd definitely be happy to snare Napa. Guerra and Lillyman are nearing the end of their careers and will provide a ton of experience and competition to the younger guys.
Napa is your typical red-headed enforcer with rep experience and has a long future ahead of him. With the Safiti boys and other young props coming through we could have a fearsome pack with Levi steering them around.

If the Roosters are willing to release him to make room in their cap then putting an offer on the table can't hurt.

    a front row of;
    Napa
    Saifiti's
    Ese
    Lillyman
    Heington
    King
Would be close to the best in the comp.
