    Knights select junior squads

    Tue 14th October, 11:58AM

The Newcastle Knights have selected its junior squads following the Club’s junior trials in late September.

More than 250 young rugby league players between the age of 16 and 20-years-old took part in the trial for the opportunity to be selected to join the Club’s junior development system.

Now the squads have been selected, the U16s and U18s commence training on Monday, November 3 with the U15s and U17s’ training kicking off on Tuesday, November 11.

All players will take part in two trials for the U16s and U18s, one against the Balmain Tigers on December 6 and another against the Manly Sea Eagles on January 17.

After the two trials, the U16s and U18s squads will be reduced to 25 for the NSWRL competition commencing on February 14 where the team will play nine rounds and a finals series.

Matt Lantry, the Knights’ manager of participation, development and infrastructure believes the junior squads identified are again at the highest standard for the region.

“The pleasing thing is this year majority of players identified across all four age groups are local players from within the Knights' catchment region, more than any other year which shows we’re dedicated to providing local players with opportunities,” Lantry said.

“Not only will this program assist players in the areas of skill, strength and conditioning but also provide awareness around areas such as social media, making good decisions, mental health and drugs and alcohol.

“Our program certainly takes a holistic approach towards players while they are inside and outside of the rugby league environment.”

Feleti Mateo should run riot in that group although I think it's going to be a bit unfair

He's the 15 year old cousin of the other guy. We signed him from Orange and he stayed there till school finished.

O'Hagan and Starling are both classy players it almost look like we're building another Cogger/Lamb halves combination with those two

FELETI might be a talent & will be an asset to the knights Harold Mathews 2015 squad, but there are also some other kids with a lot of talent who displayed there potential at the knights invitation trial. I believe they will be a force once again this year, good luck boys

Wow, we actually signed him! I remember seeing the article on him a year or 2 ago, but didn't know we were chasing him or ended up signing him...

Hopefully he's not like most big islanders, dominates clubs footy, but steps up to reps and just doesn't cut it.

150kg !! Like to see him undertake 20 sets of 40 metre sprints or doing Malcolm's at training ....

I will reserve judgement until I actually see the young fella play.

    Waste of money.
    He's just too big.
If the guy can run and has impact and agility enough to play league he should try gridiron. He looks a natural.

He's 190cm as well, so he's not just some little nugget, gives us a real sense of how big he really is!

I do agree his fitness and agility will be the biggest questions over whether he plays first grade or not. In the articles, it says he played 60minuts of A-Grade at the age of 17. I know it's only park A-grade, but 60 minutes as big as he is and as young as he is must mean he has room for improvement! Loosing a good 10 or so kgs could do him well.

Have you seen him play Billy?

I do agree with the gridion call but, could make a killing in that sport...

Apparently he's fitter than you can imagine and has a good workrate, I can't see how but he's made it into some good sides and now into our U18's so he can't be that bad. It says he's on a strict diet and had already lost something like 8 kilos and that was several months ago. Ben Murdoch Masila went to my school and he was that weight before joining the Tigers and he's dropped down to 109 and is a good young powerful player for Penrith now. I agree majority of these big kids can rarely make it after junior footy but if he's getting the training and help from our highly successful junior development team, I wouldn't rule him out just yet. If there's one thing we need coming through the ranks, it's big boppers.

My cuz told me the harold matts won on weekend and were convincing winners against tigers , but the sad thing is they start to drop players from the side this week as they build towards their 25 players. Sorry got no score or players names that played well or not so well.
