Nathan Ryan rated every club's roster for 2018

Full article in the link but here are the grades and their take on the Knights below

    Sydney Roosters: A+
    North Queensland Cowboys: A+
    Brisbane Broncos: A
    Cronulla Sharks: A
    Parramatta Eels: A
    Melbourne Storm: A-
    St George Illawarra Dragons: B+
    Penrith Panthers: B
    Manly Sea Eagles: B-
    Newcastle Knights: B-
    Canberra Raiders: C+
    Canterbury Bulldogs: C+
    South Sydney Rabbitohs: C+
    Gold Coast Titans: C-
    Wests Tigers: C-
    New Zealand Warriors: C-

    NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS

    Gains:

Herman Ese’ese (Broncos), Slade Griffin (Storm), Aidan Guerra (Roosters), Chris Heighington (Sharks), Jacob Lillyman (Warriors), Tautau Moga (Broncos), Kalyn Ponga (Cowboys), Connor Watson (Roosters), Christian Hazard (Redcliffe), Brent Naden (Raiders), Mitchell Pearce (Roosters)

    Losses:

Brendan Elliot (Titans), Dane Gagai (Rabbitohs), Rory Kostjasyn (retired), Peter Mata’utia (Leigh), Sam Mataora (retired), Jarrod Mullen (released), Mickey Paea (Hull FC), Josh Starling (Oberon), Anthony Tupou (retired), Joe Wardle (Castleford), Jacob Gagan (Rabbitohs), Jaelen Feeney (Townsville), Jack Stockwell (Titans), Chanel Mata’utia (released), Pauli Pauli (Wakefield)

    Key buy:

Mitchell Pearce. He’s a classy halfback who knows how to win. While Kalyn Ponga is another cruel signing for the team, it’s the arrival of the No.7 that has sent the club abuzz. A veteran of the game and still only 28, Pearce’s direction and energy alone will lift this team to a new level.

    The pressure:

The centres. The Knights will start the year with Sione Mata’utia playing right centre alongside Shaun Kenny-Dowall with Nathan Ross and Tautau Moga on the left edge. Having lost Dane Gagai, Peter Mata’utia, Chanel Mata’utia, Joe Wardle, Brendan Elliot and Jacob Gagan, the Knights are short of experience in the backline. While Ken Sio remains at the club, the Knights would love to add another specialist centre to their list before the season kicks off.

    Analysis:

Compare the 2018 list to that of 2017 and they’re chalk and cheese. By no means is this roster the finished product but it’s a dramatic improvement on the past three seasons. They’re still a big middle thin of being a real finals threat but as their middles like the Saifiti boys mature, their competitiveness increases. Nathan Brown stressed the importance of patience when he took over the club and his plans are finally playing out.

    Roster rating: B-

Fair. The six teams below us definitely deserve to be there. I'd be disappointed if we didn't finish ahead of them.

Bit of luck and we could get sides like the Dragons and Manly too, then you're playing finals.

Absolutely. Much has been made of the comments relating to combinations taking time to gel, but we're far from the only team with a new halves combination which levels the playing field somewhat.
Provided a possible slow start to the season doesn't sap too much enthusiasm the back end of the year should see us play some of the exciting footy from the glory days and give a finals position a real shake.

Not sure on getting above the Dragons. I rate their squad as very good. The coach however is their downfall.

But definitely as a squad I rate them where Fox sports have. In the 9-12 bracket.

We should have beaten the dragons twice last year with a NSW Cup side. Do not rate.

Interesting they say in the article were short in the middle of being a finals threat, i think thats one area we are really strong. I think i Will be the in experience of our spine that could let us down.

There you go, appears 10th is a good target to look at finishing.

You never know what can happen with teams underperforming, overperforming, injuries etc.

Cruel signing should be crucial signing, journalism leaves a lot to be desired these days.

This is evidence that who ever composed the article doesn't understand our squad well at all. We've got high quality middle forwards spilling off the 17 into reserves. Incredible depth all over the park, aside from perhaps outside backs

And to think that Manly have a better squad on paper is laughable. They've got 3 or 4 rep quality players and the rest of the squad are absolute no-names

Maybe left out a hyphen? Position 1-2 sounds better than 12th.

I'd have the Knights at a straight B, Roosters a straight A not sure Cronk adds as much as they assume and Cricton is still a year away, Cronulla I think are less of a team than last year I'd say B, Panthers at a B+ and Tigers at a straight C also Melbourne Storm I don't think are A+ just because of what they have lost but they have recruited well I'd have them a straight A and Parramatta I think they giving Hayne too much credit so they are A - for me.

How would that change our position I think that would mean:

    North Queensland Cowboys: A+
    Sydney Roosters: A
    Brisbane Broncos: A
    Melbourne Storm: A
    Parramatta Eels: A -
    St George Illawarra Dragons: B+
    Penrith Panthers: B+
    Cronulla Sharks: B
    Newcastle Knights: B
    Manly Sea Eagles: B-
    Canberra Raiders: C+
    Canterbury Bulldogs: C+
    South Sydney Rabbitohs: C+
    Wests Tigers: C
    Gold Coast Titans: C-
    New Zealand Warriors: C-

That would put us in 9th place for me that is about right where we should finish next season and perfect stepping of for 2019 to make the finals and scare a few teams in the back end of the season

Not sure why Brisbane rate so high? Aging roster particularly the forwards and no recognised halfback. It might be the hatred talking but they’ll struggle to make the 8 imo.

I agree. Nikorima is below average. Very light on in front row and will rely on untested rookies.

Only thing going their way is they will get every advantage possible from the officials. Might not be enough to squeeze in the 8 though.

On top of that they've put a lot of eggs in the Matt Lodge basket. On his past form it's a reasonable expectation that those eggs will end up busted and worthless leaving behind a massive cleanup bill before the Broncos get any benefit from him.

They have had such good run in NYC there is a lot of talent that is still in QLD cup or U/20 who are ready to come into first grade up there and they have had good success bringing them through. I think that they will fall of a cliff in 19 if they don't bring in more forward talent but I think they have one last year to have a crack.

That said I thought they are about same as the Dragons didn't drop them down myself because few unknowns for me about the Broncos
