Footy Shows

I don't think it's that bad, the old footy show was pretty bad so they needed a change. The new one is a bit more football oriented although it's pretty boring. They're probably a bit unfortunate that they exist in a time where the Fox & Matty Johns stuff are so far ahead in both football & entertainment. If that stuff wasn't around, the new footy show would probably be ok.

The Footy Show: Viewers dropping off like flies with audiences averaging just 82,000 in Sydney

THE Footy Show’s viewer exodus has continued apace with the embattled Channel Nine show suffering a whopping 31 per cent week-on-week fall in viewers in Sydney alone.

After a shaky start a fortnight ago with Erin Molan in the chair, producers promised improvements but it appears NRL audiences still aren’t buying.

On Thursday the average audience in Sydney was 82,000 — a 31 per cent fall in viewers week-on-week, while in Brisbane the average audience was even less at 70,000 — a 17 per cent fall for the same period.

The network announced Molan would take over from the show’s host of 23 years, Paul ‘Fatty’ Vautin’, in January in a change heralded as a new era for the flagship league panel show.

But Molan’s debut at the helm started off 8 per cent down in Sydney and Brisbane compared with last year’s first episode headed up by Vautin.

The backlash prompted Nine director of sports Tom Malone to tell the Telegraph’s Buzz Rothfield: “We’re already making improvements for round two.”

But the improvements clearly haven’t worked.

Meanwhile on Foxtel, The Matty Johns Show’s average audience across its first two episodes is up 8 per cent year on year at 116,000.

Unless there is a dramatic turnaround I reckon they will axe the show altogether

Fatty wasn’t the problem it was the content. Now with Matty’s show they are in trouble. Serves them right. Chanel 9 commentators suck too.

channel 9 now trying to turn Paul Gallen into a media personality, doesnt have great insights like Joey or Sterlo or have a good personality like Matty or Freddy

Channel Nine under pressure to bring back Paul Vautin as The Footy Show suffers ratings free fall

CHANNEL Nine executives are under increasing pressure to ‘Bring Back the Fat’ as flagship program The Footy Show continues to suffer a ratings free fall.

Only three weeks into its new life without veteran host Paul Vautin, the rugby league staple has gone increasingly backwards in viewer numbers — especially among the key Sydney audience.

Despite now having sports journalist Erin Molan in the host chair, Thursday night’s program tanked again attracting an average audience of just 77,000 in the Harbour City.

The worrying numbers not only continues a downward trend for the show that attracted 88,000 in week one and 82,000 in week two, but represents a 26% decline on the program’s 2017 season average.

As a result, a Facebook petition emerged this week for the return of Vautin, who late last season was axed after 23 years on set.

By Friday afternoon, the page had attracted close to 25,000 ‘likes’.

Exactly what impact Vautin would have on falling ratings is unknown.

However, several sources within the industry believe the current downturn has little to do with the 2018 format, or on-air talent, but rather the ongoing decline of the show’s popularity within recent seasons.

Last year, Nine’s Footy Show ratings slipped to an all-time low with Vautin as host, with reports suggesting viewership numbers were often as bad as 80,000.

That figure is a far cry from the halcyon days when The Footy Show regularly pulled in audiences of 370,00.

As a result, Molan was seen as the obvious choice to help boost viewership, particularly among female fans who had largely deserted the Footy Show for a wealth of Fox League programs headed by Yvonne Sampson.

Still, a poll run by The Daily Telegraph at the time of his axing had 61% of respondents saying Nine should keep Vautin as host.

Apart from dumping Fatty, Nine has also made a series of notable changes to help reverse flagging ratings.

Even after a shaky start this season, executives promised immediate improvements.

On Thursday night, for example, the program broadcast live from AAMI Park following the Grand Final rematch between Melbourne and North Queensland — with fans at the game able to hang around and watch Molan and her colleagues in action.

The move attracted mixed reviews however.

MATTY BEATS FOOTY SHOW

MATTY Johns continues to break ratings records at Fox Sports. His Thursday night show attracted its highest figures ever and beat Channel 9’s Footy Show for the first time in the city markets.

It was an extraordinary result considering Fox Sports is in only 30 per cent of homes. Johns’ show attracted 143,000 viewers after the Broncos-Bulldogs game while The Footy Show in Sydney and Brisbane was down to 110,000.

Fox Sports’ boss Steve Crawley said it was a reward for all the hard work Johns puts in.

“Everyone see the fun side of Matty but he’s also an incredibly hard worker,” Crawley said.

“And right now he’s at the top of his game.

“The show’s producers, Jamie Lockyer and Ben Churchill, are doing a brilliant job, too.

“And don’t forget Fletch, Hindy, Gordie, Hannah Hollis and Kenty. It’s a great team.”

It was new Foxtel boss Patrick Delany who hired Johns from Nine and who always said he would knock off The Footy Show one day.

No doubt Matty will be letting his little brother, Joey, know all about it.
