Bryce Cartwright free to leave Gold Coast Titans if he can get a contract elsewhere

TITANS coach Garth Brennan says he isn’t trying to offload Bryce Cartwright, but admits the struggling recruit is free to leave the Gold Coast if he isn’t happy at the club.

Cartwright’s career at the Titans is at the crossroads just six months into his four-year deal, with the former Panthers sensation languishing at feeder-club Tweed Heads in the Intrust Super Cup.

Despite charging for 177 metres in Tweed’s last-start win over Norths Devils in a man-of-the-match display, Cartwright has been overlooked again by the Titans for Sunday’s away clash against Wests Tigers.

Recent reports have claimed Cartwright has an attitude problem, prompting Brennan to begin shopping the one-time NSW Origin hopeful.

Brennan set the record straight yesterday, saying Cartwright’s management is the party exploring other options.

And while the Titans coach is determined for Cartwright to succeed on the glitter strip, the straight-shooting Brennan says whether the 23-year-old wants to stay is up to him.

“The truth is we aren’t shopping Bryce, but his management have been looking around,” Brennan said.

“Whenever a player is playing Queensland Cup, they don’t want to be there and that’s understandable. As a result, his manager has put some feelers out to see if there is any interest in Bryce.

“At the end of the day, that’s not my problem. It’s up to Bryce to play good football and if he’s playing good footy and wants to have a crack, then there is a place for him at the Titans.

“But I don’t play favourites at this club. I don’t care who you are, or what you have done, I just pick the best team I can on form.

“If Bryce doesn’t want to be here, he is more than welcome to explore his options elsewhere.

“I only want players at this club who want to be here and want to perform. Whether Bryce wants to stick it out or move on, that’s up to him.”

Cartwright has played 12 games for the Titans this season, but hasn’t been seen in the NRL since May 26, when he produced a dismal defensive display in the Coast’s 34-14 loss to the Roosters.

Brennan pushed for the Titans to issue Cartwright a lifeline and accepts he must play a part in restoring the confidence that inspired his rampaging NRL season at Penrith in 2016.

“At the moment, he’s contracted to the Titans and I’m doing what I can to get him back to the NRL,” he said.

“That’s why I put him back in the (Intrust Super) Cup, I want him to get his confidence back and be the player I know he can be.

“From what I saw, Bryce played really well for Tweed last week and so he should, because he is a talented player and I’d expect him to stand out in the Intrust Super Cup.

“There’s no doubt Bryce has more in him. I’ve seen some reports suggesting he has been slack in his rehab, I can confirm that is totally false.

“I have no issue with Bryce’s commitment, he is just down on confidence and that’s been reflected in his games.

“We all know Bryce is a talent, but the ball is now in his court. If he wants to knuckle down and work hard I will pick him, if he’s not going to do that, then I will pick on form, not reputations.”

Absolutely, but only if he's serious about turning things around.

He has all of the makings of a great player if he can get his head sorted.

A bit contradictory. Seems coach thinks he isn't putting in 100%.

I guess it depends on his reasons for his lack of commitment. If he isn't gelling with the club then maybe, but if it is Rugby League he isn't gelling with then we don't need that mindset infecting our team.

His attempts at tackles are worse than U8's.

Foran, then Cartwright. These suggestions are getting worse.

Absolutely not. The guy couldn’t tackle a stationary pole.

He needs to spend some time training with a real hitman of a defender, learn how to hurt players in defense and get some confidence

Highly skilled player but thought he could idle through first grade due to being a cut above in the lower grades.

Personally think he hasnt got the mental drive to cut it in the nrl.

Toronto wolfpack would be a good spot for him imo.

Could always be worse, just throw Hayne into the mix and you'll have 3 talented yet disinterested recruits

Maybe send a care package of old-school highlights.

I think he would really benefit from teaming up with a senior forward as a mentor, someone to build a friendly competition against.
Kinda like guys in the gym trying to outlift one another

Cartwright is everything that was wrong with the old NYC comp.
A lot of guys were able to be absolute stars in NYC without ever learning to defend.
A couple of the worst were Beau Henry and Kyle O'Donnell who we bought as standout NYC players, only to find they never learnt to defend.
O'Donnell was the worst. He would make 200 metres nearly every game in NYC by doing nothing but standing back in the number 13 jersey and spotting wounded or small defenders and running at them at full speed, but when we played him in reserve grade he got bashed by old. hardheaded forwards every game.

Mind you, Garth Brennan can't complain about Cartwright. He won premierships by using Cartwright just for his attacking skills and did nothing to improve his defence.

At least Cartwright has the potential to turn it around, however unlikely that seems. Hayne and Foran are done.

Yep, made Scott Dureau look like Trevor Gillmeister lol.

Wests won't go near him with his rep, which I applaud as well.

Because it's not in the etiquette so talk about gossip on what goes behind the scenes with a club/player on public forums let's just say there is a reason why Penrith were happy to let him get a deal elsewhere as far away as the Gold Coast. Anyone who knows a Panthers fan will tell you the truth as why he was shipped away there. Although some have already figured that out.

No club in the NRL is going to take on his full salary and contract at his price tag, and for a bloke that has serious defensive issues it's not something we need.

He would go well somewhere like sharks or roosters where their defence is actually good

We've got a hat trick of spoons in the bank and conceded 30 a game for 3 years. Cartwright's defencive issues might go unnoticed here.
