Todd Greenberg has confirmed that a ninth Immortal will be chosen in 2018

    Names being tossed up include:

    Darren Lockyer
    Mal Meninga
    Ron Coote
    Mick Cronin
    Laurie Daley
    Brad Fittler
    Ken Irvine
    Brett Kenny
    Allan Langer
    Glenn Lazarus
    Steve Mortimer
    Norm Provan
    Steve Rogers
    Peter Sterling
    Shane Webcke

Started a poll but I can only give a maximum of 10 choices so I went with who I think the top 9 candidates are and an "other" option

I've allowed multiple votes too as it's a hard call

    Vote away !!

Wouldn't mind Ken either, One of the best if not the best winger to ever play the game

    Most worthy is Mal.

No other player on that list dominated said position like mal did.

    What makes the immortals special?
    It's not statistics or awards
It's not that they where the best in their position for a few years
It's not premierships, origins or test matches
If it was just this then we have a hall of fame for that no what makes the immortals stand out is
They all redefined the way we see the game brought something extra to the game
they where the best of their generation
but most importantly this is a team sport and these guys not only raised themselves and their team mates to another level they raised their opposition to another level too.

When you start looking at it like this instead of just who is the best then players then some of the names that get mentioned really don't stack up. I know these two guys aren't eligible yet as their are still playing but if you look on paper who is the best player today it is Cameron Smith hands down. But if you going to put forward a current player forward for the 10th immortal position I reckon names like Jonathon Thurston and Greg Inglis would pop into you head first before you'd go but I'd have to add Cameron Smith to the discussion.

I like the idea of Sterlo, my money will be on Mal but I think their is a case for Freddy and Proven but I can't make a case for anyone else whose name has been put forward for the 9th immortal.

Some of those nominated are from a different era, you have to be 60+y to even have seen them play. I agree with above but it is just not football but how they handled themselves and how the public perceived them to be, immortal means held in high regard in both football and life.

I don't think Inglis will ever get there or Slater. Smith and Thurston yes.

it's consistently being the best for me and playing for a long time.

Inglis has become a passenger sicee he joined Souths.

Inglis had 3 incredible years at Souths, you could make an argument it was his best ever football. He's spent too much time though not at the top of his game to be considered an immortal.

Maybe I didn’t watch him enough. I remember his 1st year where they stuck him in centre and I’m pretty sure that stunk.

Players like Inglis and Mitchell etc have it tougher because we expect them to bust 5 tackles and score every game.

He was overweight & lazy his first year, then they moved him to fullback & he went to another level. Was very close to stealing Billy Slater's fullback spot in rep teams from memory.

Has to be someone from the recent era.

Most folk would have no idea on Provan, Coote and company. Immortals as such would then lose a lot of interest from supporters. For mine only one .. Lockyer as much as I hate the Donkeys!

Provan - 10 grand final wins. No one will ever come close.

Should of been among the first picked.

I would have Slater ahead of those, including Lockyer simply because I think he is a brilliant individual player regardless of whether you love or hate him. Yes he's been injured at times but as an individual's football ability for his position I think he's better and would make a team around him better with his play/skill.

I know people say if you put the other players in different teams would they be better or the same I think Slater would both make a new team better and still be the player he is compared to the others.

Not that any would get picked any time soon (maybe) but there are certainly older heads that have been mentioned and Mal that should get the nod first IMO.

It would just be easier if they induct all the old guys that are deserving in one swoop. Then add the newer generation over time. Rather than that, it seems like they are going to do 1 out of all those names every couple of years, likely to go with relevant guys like Meninga, Lockyer, Smith & Thurston, while the oldies keep getting pushed back, less relevant & forgotten.

Alas forty six would take a lot of the gloss from the Immortals.

For mine Coote, Irvine and Provan should've gone in before Joey

Joey had plenty of time to be named an immortal as do Lockyer and Meninga

Norm's 85 now, Ken is no longer with us and Ron is 73

Ken scored an incredible 212 tries in 236 games which is still a record for most tries by a player

He played 24 games for NSW scoring 30 tries and played 31 tests for Australia scoring 33 tries

So all up between his League Games and Rep Games he played 291 games and scored 275 tries

Coote started the Men of League Foundation which has helped thousand's of ex players, Coaches, Officials and their families

Coote played 257 games, Played in 9 Grand Finals winning 6 premierships, Played 23 tests and represented NSW 15 times

Norm played 256 games, Won 10 premierships, Played in the Finals for 15 years straight, Played 14 tests, Represented NSW 19 times and our NRL Premiership Trophy is named after him along with Arthur Summons

All 3 men are in the Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame and were all named in the 100 greatest players list in 2008

They were all named in the ARL Team of the Century and NSWRL Team of the Century as well

All 3 should be there, Time to fix it in my opinion

Makes you think that all named in team of century should be automatic selection to immortals.
