Barry Toohey is reporting that we are chasing Kristian Woolf to replace Mick Potter, He also said we went after Jason Ryles but weren't successful

    Woolf at the door

Current Townsville Blackhawks and Tongan coach Kristian Woolf has been approached about a move to Newcastle to join the Knights coaching staff under Nathan Brown.

It follows the club’s unsuccessful attempt to lure Jason Ryles from the Melbourne Storm.

The Knights are desperate to bring in a defensive-style coach for next season with popular current assistant Mick Potter reportedly set to be the one to make way.

Top top coach. Have no idea why the Cowboys haven’t got him on board with the FG side.

Wolfie Is a very popular , tough as teak bloke , breed in Mt Isa can mix it and doesn’t take a backwards step- if he gets the defensive coaches job he will add steel to the current crops backbone.

Strange that Pots is the one being shunted considering he isn’t the current D coach.

Who ever gets the job needs to solidify the defensive policy and eliminate the grey areas , a ridged policy brings about a confidence and trust which isn’t there when individual reads are allowed to undermine structures.

From what Brown said last week I understood that Potter did have a defensive role in the coaching ranks...I thought specifically with the backs.

I understand why they were trying to get Ryles and if Woolf has the pedigree you’ve cited ‘saint’ then I think he is just what we need added to the coaching ranks

He has some great connections as well.

Could see a few highly rated kids coming our way with Woolf around.

After 3 years of conceding almost 30 a game we've decided Potter is the defence coach and it's his fault. So Potter does defence and others do strength and conditioning ? What does Brown do ? Certainly motivational speaking isn't his forte judging by what happens in the second half after he adresses the team at half time. Surely as head coach Brown has to weaar some of the "blame" for our defence ? Why did it take almost 3 years to determine oue defence is shyte ?

Prob because prior we had an absolute shyte team, not we just have a semi shyte team the D hasn't improved so it's a concern.

If Potter was in charge of D for the centres, then he wasn't doing a very good job with Sione.

I don't know if the boys have been working on defence for the last week, but both reserve grade and under 20s put in their best defensive efforts for the year. Both sides were under the pump for long periods from very strong Mounties teams and never looked like cracking.
The only try scored against under 20s was from a line break about 60 metres out, while they defended about 15 sets on their line without breaking.
Reserve grade also defended set after set on their line, and only cracked once, just before halftime when they were pretty tired after defending for about 60% of the half.

Defence in the lower grades doesn't mean anything in the NRL. Apparently we have been focusing on defence for a while now, results are on the board for all to see.

Not sure how you worked that one out????
If you can't defend when playing in 20's or Reggies, you aren't going to be much chop in 1st grade!

The NRL is a whole new game, much tougher to defend in the NRL. Your mis-interpreting what my point was.

Good defence in lower grades is great, but stepping up to the NRL it does not mean much. That post was in response to Billy saying how he wasn't sure if there has been a focus on D recently, as the lower grade put in a good performance in D.

My point is, whilst it's great the lower grade might have put in a good performance, what I care about it NRL level defence.

Most assistants are low profile, he is not, think Brownie would worry about having high profile assistant, job security an all.

Mick Potter is still being talked about as first coach for the New York side that has applied to play in second division in the UK next year.

Interesting that Kristian Woolf is leading the Qld cup with his current side and his star halfback is a kid named Jaelen Feeney. If Woolf has taught that kid to tackle well, he must be good, and he can bring Feeney back with him if he's taught him to tackle too.

Frank, From the 360 show his strength is setting up a "Holistic development programmes" with a pathway from juniors through to NRL level, his success with Broncos and Panthers is there for all to see.

In one of the previous posts, a comment was made that we ( the Knights) lose most of our Juniors to other Clubs who allow them to transition into NRL , it is obvious that we have been placed through necessity into a situation where Juniors were being Graded before their time with out the proper development, which inhibits the individuals progression.

Griffin alleges to have the formula for this transitional change which could solve our developmental problems.
