NRL Holden Cup under-20s competition to end in season 2017 AAP October 28, 2016 4:32pm THE NRL’s under-20s competition will be scrapped at the end of next year, Australian Rugby League Commission chairman John Grant has confirmed. The youth competition has been on borrowed time since former NRL head of strategy Shane Richardson’s whole-of-game review last year but there was speculation it may continue beyond 2017 in some capacity. Instead, statewide under-20s competitions will be rolled out in NSW and Queensland, while the NSW and Queensland Cups will be expanded to take on an “elevated” role in rugby league’s development pathway, Grant said. “They’ll be more on television, there’s going to be more clubs in the competition and there’s going to be stronger connections through to the NRL clubs to make sure we get players from the NRL who aren’t playing for their team each weekend to come back into the tier two competition,” Grant told reporters in Brisbane on Friday. The national under-20s competition has been plagued by concerns it is not an adequate finishing school and puts undue pressure on young players. Grant defended the ARL Commission’s attempts to limit the earning capacity of NRL rookies as negotiations continue over a new collective bargaining agreement. The Rugby League Players’ Association is philosophically opposed to capping salaries but Grant said it was a sensible way to fix to a clear problem. “The fact is we take young men in our game away from their homes too early, we put them into intensive competitions, we ask too much of them and quite frankly we’ve had some disastrous outcomes,” he said. “That’s all about giving them expectations beyond what is reasonable at the time and frankly paying them too much money will do that. “We understand the RLPA’s situation and we’ve got an obligation to negotiate with the RLPA around these sort of things. But by the same token, we’re really trying to respond to the issues we’ve got.” http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sp...7/news-story/4db054174a5f66f3c6194519378f418a

So with the profiles that are up, the best side we could name next year; 1 Meaney 2 Farr 3 Penn 4 Denniss 5 Musgrove 6 Lamb 7 Cogger 8 Butterfield 9 Starling 10 Dawson 11 Sam Stone 12 Brodie Jones 13 Kurtis Dark 14 Birch 15 Tuilotolava 16 Heath Gibbs 17 Hosking
One question about the squad named for NYC is where is Pasami Saulo? He won every award going in Ball last year and played for Australia and NSW. He might be playing Ball and concentrating on his HSC, so not doing an NYC pre season. But he also might have been poached. I hope not. He had close to the perfect junior year in 2016. He was starting prop for NSW under 18s and Australian schoolboys, led of SG Ball side to some very good results, won all the major awards for our Ball squad, including the Carlsen/Johns award as our best junior - and also managed to run over 100 metres in his first game of NYC as a bench prop. I suppose he could be playing another year of Ball and concentrating on his HSC, as some 17/18 year olds do.
http://www.newcastleknights.com.au/news/2016/11/08/bright_futures_suppo.af_news.html If I'm not mistaken that's him in the far back right of the picture, so he's still with the club.
So our best possible under 20s side from the profile pics that are up, Nick Meaney Musgrove Cory Denniss Henry Penn Dean Kouka-Smith Brock Lamb Jack Cogger Butterfield Tom Starling Keanu Dawson Sam Stone Eddie Tuilotolava Brodie Jones ???? bench hooker Heath Gibbs Cameron King Zac Hoskings But it wouldn't surprize me if most, if not all, those guys are playing either firsts or reserves for most of the year.

It'd be interesting to see how Jack Johns goes. If he wants to have a career anything like Matthew or even Joey he'd have to play out of his skin all while competing with Cogger, Lamb and eventually Feeney, Pearsall etc if he makes it that far.
He has to get past O'Hagan, Birch and Hoy who have all played for NSW and Josh Ralph who has played for Qld as well. I think Johns' best chance is if Meaney plays reserve grade and Johns plays fullback in NYC.
New profile pics have gone up for NYC. Matt Croker and Tex Hoy have been removed - I assume they have joined the SG Ball squad for now. Pasami Saulo has been added. He would have always been in the squad - just someone didn't have a pic for him or something.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but when did Hoy & Birch play for Nsw.? Yes they were both in the Nsw pathways squads but neither were selected too play Origin
We had so many players make squads and teams over the last few years I can't keep track of them anymore. I think we had the most players in both the under 16s and under 18s squads last year - something like 12 or 13 players, plus 3 in the schoolboys team I think. Only a few years ago we would get maybe 2 or 3 players and it was easy to remember who made teams, but now it's like you have to write it all down to even remember who made squads.
correct! and mussie was there as well! The boys are close! - - - Updated - - - So who watched the trial? Any thaughts? The new recruits did not mate up to their impressive Bios!
