NYC Knights overpower Thunderbolts

Sat 2nd April, 02:22PM

In what was an incredible game of two halves, the NYC Newcastle Knights came up 34-26 winners over the Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park on Saturday afternoon.

While the young Knights had an incredible first half in which everything they touched turned to gold, their opponents scored 18 unanswered points early in the second stanza to set up a very nervy finish.

For long periods thereafter the Thunderbolts hammered away at the Knights’ line, and it wasn’t until the 78th minute that the red and blues were assured of their victory thanks to a breakaway Kainoa Gudgeon try.

The left side combination of Ken Tofilau and the returning Cory Denniss were outstanding for the Knights as well, creating and scoring three of the side’s five tries in the first half and preventing several as well in the dying stages of the match.

Melbourne got off to a strong start when Charlie Garlo burst through the line to set up a try for Cory Parker on the left flank.

Fullback Jesse Arthars’ attempted conversion went well wide, and soon after a good kick from Jake McNamara forced a repeat set.

A brilliant flick pass from Cory Denniss in the following set gave Ken Tofilau an easy try in the left corner, and Brock Lamb converted to put the Knights into the lead.

Five minutes later the Knights’ left edge combined again, Denniss collecting a loose ball to run deep into Thunderbolts territory and pass to Tofilau for his second try.

Lamb again struck the ball sweetly from the sideline for the conversion.

With 19 minutes played the home side were denied a try due to a forward pass and soon after Denniss again came to the fore for the Knights, offloading on halfway to set up a first NYC try for Zac Hosking.

The Knights were well and truly running the show now, and two minutes later fullback Nick Meaney made a line break that resulted in Tofilau getting his third.

Six minutes from half time Storms' five-eighth Scott Drinkwater made a break to run 30 metres and score, but the Knights had the final say in the half when SG Ball graduate Tom Starling sent a quick pass from dummy-half for Jordan Pinnock to score untouched beneath the uprights.

Lamb made it five conversions from five attempts to push the half-time score to 30-8.

The Thunderbolts opened the scoring in the second half, Jaiyden Hunt making a big break in the 45th minute.

Minutes later Drinkwater set alarm bells ringing for the young Knights as he grabbed his second solo try.

Arthars converted to make the score 30-20, and the second half only got worse for the Knights five minutes later as Galo forced his way over the line.
With 25 minutes still left to play the Knights suddenly found themselves looking at a very nervy finish.

The Thunderbolts continued to hammer away at the red and blue line, but the Knights rediscovered their defensive starch.

Ten minutes from the final siren Arthar looked sure to score in broken play, until opposite number Meaney stepped up to make a try saving one-on-one tackle.

The Thunderbolts had two more clear-cut opportunities to score, but with two minutes left on the clock the Knights counter-attacked brilliantly when Jamayne Taunoa-Brown pounced on a loose pass to give Gudgeon a 40 metre try.

Lamb missed the conversion, the final score 34-26.

If so, I wouldn't like to pay the feed bill for two of those.

We lead 30-10 after 52 minutes, Really poor to let a lead like that go and a hugely disappointing result

It's becoming a thing that we fall in a heap when the bench players are out there.

NYC Knights split points with Tigers

Sun 10th April, 03:24PM

The NYC Newcastle Knights drew 30-30 with the Wests Tigers at Hunter Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Despite leading by 20 points at one stage in the second half, the young Knights weren’t able to keep out a fast finishing Tigers side desperate for points.

The young Knights started the game strongly, the two halves combining superbly in the seventh minute when Jack Cogger dinked the ball over the line for Brock Lamb to score.

With 20 minutes played the Tigers returned serve, Jacob Liddle feinting his way over from dummy-half.

The away side made an error from the following restart though, and the Knights capitalised when Kainoa Gudgeon used his raw pace to beat his marker and score.

11 minutes later the red and blues were over again, hooker Joe Morris grabbing his third try in three games when he slipped over the line.

Lamb’s flawless kicking from the tee made it 18-6, but minutes before halftime his opposite number Veiru Mapesone made a beeline through the Knights’ defence to score in the corner.

An error from Zac Hosking early in the second half gave the Tigers another chance to attack the Knights’ line.

Mapesone looked to be on another one of his dangerous runs, until Braden Robson showed great strength to pull him out of play.

It didn’t take long for the Knights to kick into gear again after that, interchange forward Jayden Butterfield bulldozing his way over the line from ten metres out.

Lamb again converted to make the score 24-10, and two minutes later more points were added to the tally when Mitch Casson scored near the uprights for his first NYC try.

Things quickly went downhill from there for the Knights, the Tigers scoring three tries in five minutes via Samuel Deffides, Daniel Roberts and Jacob Liddle.

Mapesone was only able to convert on one count, the score now 30-24.

With five minutes to play the Tigers picked up two penalties close to the Knights’ line and the pressure paid off, JJ Felise scoring to cap off a remarkable comeback.

Robertson converted, the final score 30-30.

Match analysis:

When the NYC Newcastle Knights meet the Brisbane Broncos on Saturday, maintaining intensity will be focus after last week’s draw at Hunter Stadium.

The Knights built a solid lead but were overtaken by the Tigers after a lapse in concentration after the break.

“We switched off,” coach Todd Lowrie said.

“We played really well in the first half and started the second half quite strongly. We were in front then the boys went away from doing what we know works for us.

“We had a period of about 15 or 20 minutes where we went away from what got them in the position."

A quality week of preparation and thorough review of their failings puts the young Knights in a strong position to take on
the NYC Broncos in Round 8.

“There were some things that have needed to be addressed with our performance and we have done that,” he said.

“We are looking towards the Broncos this week and making sure we stick to doing what we know works.

“We do what we do well and when we go away from that, we find ourselves in trouble.

“They will be tough and have a lot of really strong ball carriers.

"A lot of blokes carry the ball well and there are a couple of really good individual players, especially playing up there.”

Lowrie praised his personnel for managing an abundance of movement within the side.

“We have had quite a bit of up and down over the last two weeks,” he said.

“That’s the nature of the beast in the 20s, and to the guys credit, they handled it really well last week apart from that 15 minute period.”

Where it will be won:
Possession

“It will be about who can hold on to the footy and build the most pressure.

“From watching them and watching us, if you can get through your sets and complete and finish well you can generally score points.”

Steely NYC Knights edge Broncos

Sat 16th April, 07:07PM

The NYC Knights showed nerves of steel to come from behind and beat the Broncos 19-18 at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday evening.

Trailing by 12 points with 20 minutes to play, late tries to Nick Meaney and Joe Morris as well as a classy field goal from skipper Jack Cogger saw the young red and blues steal the two points.

Ten minutes in Brisbane came up with the first points, winger David Fauid taking advantage of superior numbers on the left to go over untouched.

Haydyn O’Hara did well to convert from the sideline, and five minutes later Broncos hooker Kalolo Saitua forced his way over from dummy-half.

Trailing by 12 points the Knights needed to kick into gear, and with 20 minutes played they looked like scoring when Brock Lamb made a break, but Zac Hosking dropped his pass and the home side was left unpunished.

After continued attacking forays the Knights finally got their first points ten minutes later when Morris dived over from close range.

Lamb added the extras and seconds before half time the Knights looked to have evened the score when fullback Meaney found the line.

The referee ruled obstruction however, and the Knights still found themselves chasing 20 minutes into the second half having had the lion’s share of possession.

With 62 minutes played Meaney came up with a brilliant try-saver on the wing, but there was no denying Fauid four minutes later when he grabbed his second in the corner.

Soon after a length of the field run from Meaney got the Knights back in the game, and Lamb converted to make the score 18-12.

With seven minutes left on the clock Joe Morris grabbed his second try of the evening when he dived under the posts, and Lamb again converted to make the score even.

It was panning out as a frantic finale to the game, and with three minutes to play captain Jack Cogger stepped up to slot a field goal and win the game for the Knights. The final score a very tight 19-18.
