KIERAN Foran’s season has once again been cut short by injury, but Newcastle legend Matty Johns because the Knights could do worse than give Canterbury a phone call about the playmaker’s contract.

On Monday, the Bulldogs revealed the former New Zealand international would be sidelined for the remainder of 2018 due to a toe injury which he needed surgery for.

It’s been well documented the club’s salary cap is a mess due to the decisions of previous management and they’ve been trying to free up space by offloading Moses Mbye and Aaron Woods.

Bulldogs chief executive Andrew Hill has also publicly shutdown rumours the club are looking to medically retire Foran who is on a reported $1.1 million per season.

But despite his hefty pay packet, Johns reckons it’s still worth the Knights asking the question.

“If I was the Newcastle Knights, I’d be making subtle inquiries to the Bulldogs,” Johns told The Late Show with Matty Johns.

“At the right price, I’d team him up with Mitchell Pearce — they’re best mates.

“It’d be a fair spine if he gets back to toward best: Foran, Pearce and Kalyn Ponga.

“What’s the right price … it depends how much trouble the Bulldogs are in (salary cap wise).

“If you’re the Knights, for $500,000 would you take a punt and have a subtle inquiry?

“It’s high risk, but if it pays off, big dividends.”

What a joke, he would be good if he got back to close to his best lol. As if.

This was on the Matty Johns show last night.
After he said it Matty asked how much is he on and Kenty said 1.1mil.
Johns replied Wtf?
 
If there was still such a thing as a match payments only contract i'd give him one of those.
 
If we were desperately trying to burn a chunk of unspent salary cap for zero nett benefit then sure.

Otherwise a ridiculous proposition

Lol the chances of Foran getting back towards his best are slim and none.

His $1.1M salary is laughable. Matty’s suggestion of eating $500K of that is still a joke. I’d roll the dice on him, but for $300K max, provided the sit down meeting with him goes swimmingly and his body isn’t damaged goods.

That’s a long way of saying it wouldn’t happen.
 
Well im not so sure that it wouldn't be a good idea I know Foran has had a **** year but this guy was the best 5/8 in the NRL for a long while there .
He is a big talent at his best and sometimes a move away from your problems and the club you don't like much fixes everything …
It would be a risk and the club would need to talk to him and see exactly where he is at first but him going well next to Pearce and Ponga behind them would be bloody scary .
Especially if the club determines that his head is in the right place and its just injury getting him down and they can get him for 1/2 his contract .
I may be a bit bias because for a few years there he was my absolute favourite player to watch because he was so bloody good .
 
We deadset dodged a bullet, if the Bulldogs didn't offer the extra year who knows what he would have decided. We ended up getting Pearce...pretty good consolation heh.
His body has been broken since he pretty much left Manly, and Manly probably knew this would happen as well. They seem to have a knack for letting players leave just as they about to break down.

Not worth any sort of money that he would be wanting even if the Bulldogs are willing to pay over 50% of it. The cap money is better spent elsewhere

Matty must be saying all of the above to get viewership
 
Matty is off his head here. Foran is done. Mentioning 500k too as if that's a modest amount to take a punt on. Would be Hokko all over again.
 
The dogs are looking at medically retiring him apparently. That isn't a player you offer a lifeline to. Not to mention his off field dramas.

Hell I would rather take on Hayne than Foran.

Not sure whether that was meant as an insult to Matt Hilder :shrug: because I'd certainly select him over Hayne or Foran on form (his form in retirement vs theirs currently) haha
 
If Foran had just had one poor season I would be interested but he played less than half a season at the Eels in 2016 than struggled for Form last year and it’s been different this year. He started the season well for the Eels in 2016 but since that injury his never been the same and I honestly don’t ever see him even becoming a solid NRL player again let alone dominate the way he did once before.
