The race for the NRL top eight will go down to the final day of the regular season but referees remained under the spotlight after coming under fire this weekend from coaches feeling helpless heading into the finals.

Manly boss Des Hasler and Canberra's rookie mentor Neil Henry both unloaded on the men in the middle after their sides went down on the back of several contentious decisions.

The Sea Eagles were denied a try to winger Michael Robertson, swinging the momentum of their match against New Zealand Warriors, while the Raiders were left fuming when an alleged knock-on denied halfback Todd Carney a try that would have put his side up 19-6 against Brisbane.

The Raiders went on to lose 30-19, the Broncos moving back into the top eight on points differential ahead of the Wests Tigers, who slumped to a 37-12 loss to South Sydney at Leichhardt Oval.

Hasler, who was also scathing in his assessment of referee Sean Hampstead's performance in Manly's loss to the Bunnies last Monday night, said the inconsistency in the obstruction rule was driving coaches mad.

Robertson was denied with the Sea Eagles trailing 12-10, the Warriors going down the other end of the field to score minutes later en route to a 36-14 victory.

"I am almost embarrassed for (referees' boss) Robert Finch because now there is obviously some clear confusion among the NRL refs and officials," Hasler said.

"In my view in the last couple of weeks I have seen a referees coach and Bill Harrigan (Finch's assistant), who in my opinion allows tries from shepherds, and today this ruling on the Manly no try at 12-10 was clearly a momentum turner for us.

"I have got no idea as to why the NRL official would disallow that try. There was no-one obstructed. No-one was touched. No decoy runners went through the line.

"So it is a shame because what scares me is, and is worrying me now, is we are going into a semi-finals series and to me that decision turned that match."

Henry was equally as livid, even though the result had little bearing on his side's finals chances with the Raiders already out of the running.

"We're not going to figure in the finals but I think there's going to be eight coaches in the finals out there going 'I don't know what's going to happen", Henry said.

"It will cost someone further down the track."

Despite thumping the Tigers, Souths are yet to confirm their first finals appearance in 18 years as they joined Parramatta and the Bulldogs on 26 competition points.

The Eels can book their spot with a win over St George Illawarra on Monday night, when they would join Melbourne, Manly and North Queensland in being guaranteed finals footy, the latter three to have home ground advantage in the first week.

Souths will confirm a spot in the eight with a win over bitter rivals Sydney Roosters on Saturday night at Telstra Stadium, halfback Joe Williams claiming he was already counting down the days until the showdown.

"It's going to come down to that last game against the Chooks - what better way would you want it - fierce old rivals, at home, in front of a packed crowd," Williams said.

"It's going to be a cracker ... they don't want to get beaten in the last game of the year by us, they want to knock us out purely and simply because it's us."

Defending premiers Brisbane (24 points) can also confirm their spot in the finals with a win over Parramatta on Sunday, the Broncos enjoying a points differential of over 100 points on the ninth-placed Tigers who are also on 24.

The Tigers need to beat Newcastle on Friday night to be any chance of qualifying, then hope Brisbane lose.

Their only other chance of qualifying is if they beat the last-placed Knights by a cricket score and hope one of Souths or the Bulldogs also lose by big margins.

NRL top eight now set
Friday Aug 31 23:08 AEST
The NRL's top eight is now set, but the finishing order is yet to be determined after the Wests Tigers threw away their last shot at the playoffs with a 26-24 capitulation to Newcastle.

The Tigers led 24-12 with eight minutes remaining, but folded like a deck of cards to suffer their second successive loss with a Kurt Gidley penalty goal after the siren.

The result ensures the NRL Premiership will be a battle between Melbourne, Manly, North Queensland, New Zealand, Bulldogs, Parramatta, South Sydney and Brisbane.

Only the Storm, Sea Eagles and Cowboys are assured of their finishing positions, but below the top three a dogfight looms over a tense weekend.

The Warriors can secure fourth spot and the last remaining home final with a win over Penrith on Saturday night at CUA Stadium, a result that would also hand the Panthers the wooden spoon.

The Bulldogs blew their shot at a home final by going down to the Cowboys 38-32 in Townsville.

The Dogs however avoided a dreaded trip to Melbourne next week by reeling in a massive 22-point deficit late in the game to save themselves from finishing in eighth position.

But the blue and white campaign could suffer an even bigger blow than the defeat, with superstar Sonny Bill Williams placed on report for a late tackle on North Queensland gun Johnathan Thurston.

It wasn't just Newcastle fans cheering the remarkable win, as the Tigers loss ensures South Sydney's first finals appearance since 1989.

The Rabbitohs can finish as high as fourth with a win over the Sydney Roosters on Saturday at Telstra Stadium, but require the Warriors and Eels to both suffer defeats.

Parramatta host Brisbane on Sunday in the other finals-defining clash, both teams desperate to win and avoid an eighth place finish and a trip to Victoria to face the minor premiers.

Fittler lets fly at Fa'alogo
By Steve Jancetic
September 01, 2007 TENSIONS between the NRL's most bitter rivals reached boiling point after Sydney Roosters coach Brad Fittler branded South Sydney' David Fa'alogo a coward for his king hit on Braith Anasta.

The Roosters ruined the Rabbitohs' top-four hopes by storming away with a 26-12 win at Telstra Stadium, but all eyes were on Fa'alogo after he appeared to lose the plot.

With 11 minutes remaining and the result beyond doubt, Fa'alogo took offence to an apparent Anasta grapple tackle, hitting the Roosters pivot with a right hook that required four stitches in a nasty mouth cut and saw the New Zealand forward sent to the sin bin.

Somehow the Rabbitohs still received the penalty for the grapple tackle, much to the bemusement of Fittler.

"I've seen 5000 of those tackles this year - it was a coward act,'' Fittler said.

"He just got up and had a free swing, I just think it was poor.''

While Anasta didn't get the chance to return fire on the field, he didn't hold back off it as he let Fa'alogo have it with both barrels.

"He's a weak human, it's the lowest, weakest thing I've ever seen,'' Anasta said.

"If he can't take a tackle ... it's just disgraceful. He's not playing netball - he king hit me, he'll get a few weeks (suspension), he won't be playing in the semis, he's just cost his team a player.

"I didn't think anything happened, all I felt was a punch to the head, he got a clean shot.''

Fa'alogo wasn't the only one to feel Anasta's wrath, with referee Ben Cummins also copping a serve for binning the former NSW Origin five-eighth with just over a minute left on the clock.

With tensions bubbling, Anasta and Souths halfback Jeremy Smith exchanged face slaps before Anasta was binned to the delight of the crowd.

"The referee lost the plot, he just listened to the crowd. He should check his undies, seriously,'' Anasta said.

"I've never seen anybody give into the crowd like he did. How do I get 10 in the bin for getting punched in the head and throwing one back?''

Souths coach Jason Taylor initially refused to comment on the Fa'alogo incident, but eventually his disappointment in the forward got the better of him.

"I said to the boys after the game I don't want to be a coach who has players who don't want to let the referee handle things,'' Taylor said.

"That's all we'll say about that.''

The loss saw the Bunnies miss an opportunity to push for a top-four berth, but even that would have been to no avail with New Zealand Warriors later securing a home final with a win over Penrith.

But instead of finishing fifth or sixth, Souths will now finish near the bottom of the eight and face a sudden death-match against Melbourne or Manly depending on the result of tomorrow's Brisbane-Parramatta match.

Anasta and Fitler fired up!

"He's a weak human, it's the lowest, weakest thing I've ever seen,'' Anasta said.

What is Anasta on about? He practically choked Fa'alogo, then he started throwing them at Smith when Smith was just fending him off!

Fa'alogo will get a few matches for that though, and may miss a fair bit of the Kiwi's end of year matches, which is sad.

I gotta kinda disagree james. Even if it was a grapple and he was choking him - like fitler said - it happens to toher players everyweek and u dont see other players get up swinging from it.

I agree with Brogga, Grapples happen ever week and nobody gets up and king hits someone like a dickhead. And if he wants 2 fight at least be man enough 2 do it face to face

very entertaining round i think, plenty of tries scored in it. I always though that the eels would beat the bronx but puting 68 on them was out of the blew. Melbourne have to be raging hot favourites now with their win and many struggling, a good stat that every backline player 1 to 7 scored in tonights game for the storm. I can only see the cowboys contending but if anything happens to thurston they are gonskis according to their performance on Friday night without him.

yea Eels and Storm stacked on the points!

Bedsey_is_the_best

I don't think the cowboys will do so well againest team like the storm because they have really poor defence. The Eels showed that if they are on they can win but are 2 inconsistent. I dunno this weekend had blown the finals wide open
