Looks like Daniel Anderson might be interested in the coaching job ...

Newcastle officials have received a number of new applications for the vacant 2007 coaching job from Great Britain and New Zealand as well as Australia.

Of the possible candidates in Super League, former Warriors coach Daniel Anderson is contracted to St Helens until the end of next season but wants to return to the NRL in 2008, while fellow Australian Ian Millward has two more years at Wigan.

"Daniel isn't looking to come back until 2008 but the way things are going clubs will be making those appointments in March or April," Anderson's agent Jim Banaghan said.

But if we want Lang we'll have to go after him (he's got my tactics for attracting girls ... wait for them to come to you. I tell ya though Langy - never works!)

Lang was in a buoyant mood for a coach who had just been shown the door by a club he took to a premiership in 2003 and said he was looking forward to this season.

He said he wouldn't chase any coaching positions despite opportunities existing at Canberra and Newcastle - fuelling speculation he could retire at the end of the season and join his son and former Panthers prop Martin on the Gold Coast.

"I've been in this game for 13 years so if anybody's interested I'm sure they'd be able to get hold of my number," Lang said.

"I'll coach while somebody will give me a job and while I've still got the drive and enjoyment of it.

"In the end I still love the footy. It's great to be coaching at this level. This is the best rugby league there is."

It is understood the Raiders would not be interested in Lang while the Knights would not rule him out before the football committee discussed its remaining candidates.

Newcastle has missed out on Tim Sheens and Elliott. The main contenders left for the Knights position include David Fairleigh and Peter Sharp.

And last of all, the Alice Springs trial went down a hit!

NRL keen to continue Top End trials
The National Rugby League (NRL) is keen to stage another trial game in the Northern Territory next year after the success of Saturday night's match between Newcastle and Penrith in Alice Springs.

The Knights agreed to switch the game from Newcastle in a bid to promote rugby league in Central Australia.

For the match to be held in the Territory next year, the Panthers would have to give up their right to host the game in Penrith.

NRL chief executive David Gallop was in Alice Springs for the match, won by the Panthers 36-30, and said the Territory was in line to host regular games.

"I think there are plans to look at Darwin and that'd be a huge hit up there I hope and, who knows, [we] could be back in Alice Springs on a regular basis," he said.

Mr Gallop said he hoped the match had inspired children in Central Australia to take up rugby league.

"The game's got a rich history of having kids from regional areas become stars," he said.

"A lot of Indigenous kids make it in rugby league, so hopefully this is inspirational for them."
