Claims Penrith star Gower manhandled Test great's daughter
December 22, 2005

PENRITH halfback Craig Gower is at the centre of another alcohol-fuelled incident involving rugby league players, with allegations the Test footballer manhandled the daughter of former great Wayne Pearce after a charity golf event.

Gower was at the presentation dinner for the Jack Newton Celebrity Golf Classic on the Sunshine Coast when the incident reportedly occurred.

The Nine Network reported that the 27-year-old had manhandled the woman and was later involved in separate heated altercations with both Pearce and the son of the former Test player and NSW captain. It was further alleged that Gower - who was thrown out of the Australian rugby league team for exposing himself to a tourist in 1999 and fined $3000 for breaking a NSW team curfew last year - was kicked out of the official function, and had walked around the resort naked and crashed a golf cart.

Gower did not return calls yesterday but on Tuesday he strenuously denied any wrongdoing. "I'm up here to have a good time and that's it. What, I can't go out and enjoy myself?" he said. "At the end of the day, I am a normal bloke. I'm no better than anybody else. As long as I respect others, that's the main thing."

His position had altered yesterday, admitting in a statement he had pushed the boundaries on Monday night.

In the same statement, tournament host Jack Newton said "unfortunately Craig Gower probably crossed the line on one occasion" but described the allegations as unsubstantiated.

Alcohol abuse in league has come under the microscope recently, with former Australia coach Wayne Bennett speaking out about binge drinking's affect on the NRL last week.

"I'm sick of the drunks and I'm sick of our game being dragged through every media outlet in the country every time some guy behaves badly," Bennett said.

Nine's footage showed golf event MC, Billy J Smith, asking Gower about alcohol on the recent Kangaroos tour to Great Britain and France. "What about this drinking they reckon has been happening over there?" Smith asked. Gower's first words were censored and he continued: "I'm just trying to get into it now."

Penrith football manager Mick Leary said the club would conduct a full investigation into the alleged incidents and would have a finding by year's end.

"Put it this way - my holidays are gone," Leary said. "I will put recommendations to the Panthers board for their final decision."

Leary would not confirm if Gower would be sacked if some or all of the allegations proved correct but he made it clear that even if the player was on a break, he was still representing the club.

"They have an NRL contract and I believe they are then representing their club and the NRL for that period of time," Leary said. "It's like with any business. When is your down time, when is your free time? I suppose you've got plenty of it as long as you don't go and run out and do something stupid with it."

The NRL last night backed Penrith's investigation, while Gower's manager Greg Willett said he was a "great role model".

"He just denies it. He said that's not how it was. I can only vouch for his character," Willett said. "It was his bucks night. Everyone was buying him beers and that, he had two days of a bucks party and things like that."

Bennett, who resigned as Australia coach earlier this month, believes the drinking culture in league is destroying the game.

What do people on the board (all 3 of us) think of this? Dane Tilse was sacked from the Knights at the start of this year for much the same indiscretion, if the reports of both incidents are accurate ... what is the bet that Gower will not face the same punishment? I reckon the NRL or Penrith should come down pretty hard on him, as the captain of Penrith and an Australian rep he should be setting an example.

Plus, it is unbelievable that Gower could do that with Amanda Flynn sitting at home!!! Geez, I guess he doesn't know how lucky he is ... haha.

I was watching that on the news and couldnt believe that he would do something like that. I hope that Amanda is a bit angry at him for doing what he did.

I dont think that she should dump him because they make a really cute couple. But I do think that Craig really needs to admit what he did and apologise. Because there are people that saw him do it.

You Can Take Gower Anywhere - but only once
By Steve Connolly and Laine Clark
Brisbane: Craig Gower might have been "as full as Santa's toy sack" but it is unlikely he will be doing much more celebrating this christmas.
The Penrith international is the latest star accused of bringing the game into desrepute with allegedly alcohol-fuelled antics at Sunshine Coast charity golf event.
In the biggest controversy to hit the Jack Newton Celebrity Classic since then Prime Pinister Bob Hawke accidentally struck a schoolboy with a golfball in 1986. Gower allegedly groped a teenage girl.
She just happened to be the 17-year-old daughter of one of rugby league's most respected figures, the teetotal Wayne Pearce.
Pearce and his son, Mitchell reportedly had an altercation with Gower, who was also allegedly kicked out of an offical function, crashed a golf cart and walked around the Novotel Twin Waters resort naked.
Penrith football manager Mick Leary flew to the Sunshine Coast to investigate the allegations despite no complaints being made to police or resort management.
But swimming great Dawn Fraser, who witnessed the alleged incident with Pearce's daughter Tatum, said Gower was "drunk and out of control" and she called on him to apologise.
Gower was among a host of mostly sporting and television celebrities who annually congregate for golf and fun at the tournament known as "The Jack"
Host Jack Newton, the former Australian Open Champion and TV commentator, was appalled the media attention over Gower overshadowed a tournament that has helped raised more than A$2 million for junior golf and Diabetes Australia.
Media scrutiny over Gower's behaviour snowballed after a report in Tuesday's Sunshine Coast Daily newspaper said he was "as full as Santa's toy sack on Christmas Eve."
Gower teed off at 11am in the first round of the pro-am at Peregian Waters golf course "still feeling the effects of what must have been a heavy Sunday night"
The daily said he "put down his Crown Lager for long enough to drill his opening tee shot straight down the middle of the first" and then quoted Gower as saying "I play off seven, but it could be 700 today".
When contacted about the report, agitated Gower said he had done nothing wrong.
"I'm up here to have a good time and that's it. What, I can't go out and enjoy myself?," the incumbent test halfback said.
"Just because you turn up with a beer in your hand, that means you're full?'
Alcohol consumption in rugby league came under the microscope again recently when former Australian coach Wayne Bennett spoke out about binge drinking's affect on the NRL.
"I'm sick of the drunks and I'm sick of our game being dragged through every media outlet in the country everytime some guys behave badly." said Bennett, who quit after Australia's recent Tri-Nations series loss to New Zealand.
Former international and Origin coach Graham Lowe has said the reported binge drinking coulture on the Kangaroo tours was "nothing new".
"Arguably the best Kangaroos touring team were the 1982 Invincibles." he said.
"They stayed in the Dragonarra Hotel in Leeds . . . and the drinking exploits there were legendary.
"Doors and room in the hotels were badly damaged and a car used by a couple of the players ended up in the canal near the hote;, blocking the way of the barges."
While past players have gotten away with drinking exploits. Gower has found out the hard way that sportsmen now need to behave in public.
Gower is due to marry longtime girlfriend and Footy Show regular Amanda Flynn next month and the Jack Newton event was part of his "buck's week", according to his manager Greg Willett.
"Everyone was buying him beers" Willett said.
It does not help Penrith skipper Gower's cause that he was thrown out of the Australian team for exposing himself to a tourist in 1999. He was also fined $3000 for breaking a New South Wales curfew last year.
Newton, who is angered by his event being "undeservedly marred" by the Gower scandal, acknowledged he had "crossed the line".
"Craig Gower's alleged behaviour for the duration of the tournament is a personl issue for Craig to address with football club," Newton said.
Dont expect to see Craig Gower back at "The Jack" next year.

See that now he is saying he was so drunk he doesn't remember anything. It must be bad if he's doing that, saying you don't remember anything is always the last resort of a guilty man!!!

He has apologised and could be fined or suspended. But the Panthers are not going to get rid of him. I am glad that they arent going to release him. because he is a good player. I just think he needs to sort out his off field dramas first.

I suppose to put it in perspective, if I did something like that chances are I'd be labelled a few unkind things by a few people, but it's pretty unlikely I'd lose my job over it. I think a 5 game suspension or something would be a pretty strong deterrent, hopefully Penrith do something like that.

Another Little Article About Craig Gower in todays (5/1/06) Otago Daily Times:

Boot For Gower
Penrith Halfback Craig Gower (27) was last night sacked as captain after the NRL club found him guilty of misconduct following a series of alcohol-fulled incidents on the Sunshine Coast a fortnight ago.
He also received a A$100,000 ($NZ109.385) fine - $70,000 of which was suspended. The rest will go into an NRL programme covering responsible use of alcohol by players.
Gower appeared before the Panthers board yesterday after it was revealed he had groped the 18-year-old daughter of rugby league great Wayne Pearce at a function during the Jack Newton Celebrity Golf Classic

I think that he kind of deserved what he got. I think that he is a great rugby league player but he has got some issues with alcohol.

Also did you see 3 news sports today. Amanda Flynn was on there. I wish that I had been recording it so I could have got the screen caps of her.

I have to applaud Penrith for taking such a strong stance on Gower! If he doesn't learn his lesson from this then he probably never will.

I was reading the other day that Tony Puletua is a front-runner for the job ... it'd be cool to have a Kiwi captaining another side!
